The Single Girl's Survival Guide to Valentine's Day

Being single isn't always easy. And being single on Valentine's Day? That can be even tougher. It's something I used to dread. I'd do anything to prevent being alone on February 14. And then... something changed.

After spending a few years in an unhealthy relationship where I gave too much and received almost nothing in return, I realized that sometimes being on your own is actually a lot less painful than trying to keep things together with someone else. I'd so much rather be single and at peace than coupled up in chaos.

Still, Valentine's Day for singles can sound depressing. But after spending last year's Hallmark holiday completely on my own, I have to report that it was actually pretty blissful. That surprised me at the time. I took steps to make it feel special, but I wasn't really expecting to enjoy myself quite so much. And now, I'm actually looking forward to being single on Valentine's Day again this year.

After all, love isn't just for romantic relationships – and there's so much more to life than that one type of partnership. So if you're looking for ways to celebrate Valentine's Day when you're single, I'm sharing what I learned (and what I did) so you can reclaim this day and find the joy in it.

My Single Girl's Survival Guide for Valentine's Day

single girl's guide to valentine's day

Treat Yourself Like You're Your Own Soulmate

I've been single for 4+ years now, but I think I've figured out why last year was the best Valentine's Day I've ever had: No one knows what I like more than I do! I can always count on me to buy my favorite candy or my favorite flowers. If I buy myself a little gift, I know I'll be thrilled to receive it. And if I make my own plans, I never have to worry about being let down.

If you want to know how to celebrate Valentine's Day single as a Pringle, treat yourself like you're your own soulmate. Buy your own chocolate and bouquet. Get yourself a gift that you might not otherwise buy for yourself. Make plans that you'll love, even if there isn't anyone in your life to experience them with you. Don't wait on someone else to make you happy. You can do that just as well (if not better) for yourself.

Create Your Hype Girl Playlist

Music is incredibly powerful. The right song can instantly lift my spirits. So whether you're feeling a little down or just want to keep the party going, I highly recommend making a single on Valentine's Day playlist to carry you through.

I'm outing myself as a grandma here, but I don't use Spotify. (I literally still buy songs on iTunes – sue me.) Regardless of how you listen to your music, curate or find a playlist that makes you feel confident, empowered, and joyful. Here are some songs that are guaranteed to pump me up:

"Good as Hell" – Lizzo
"I'm Every Woman" – Chaka Khan
"Made You Look" – Megan Trainor
"Get Into It (Yuh)" – Doja Cat
"Man! I Feel Like a Woman" – Shania Twain
"No Scrubs" – TLC
"Who Do You Think You Are" – Spice Girls
"B*tch" – Meredith Brooks
"Savage" – Megan Thee Stallion
"abcdefu" – Gayle
"Hit 'Em Up Style (Oops)" – Blu Cantrell
"Shake It Off" – Taylor Swift
"Up"  – Cardi B
"Shout Out To My Ex" – Little Mix
"Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" – Cyndi Lauper
"Push It" – Salt-N-Peppa
"Barbie Girl" – Aqua
"Run the World (Girls)" – Beyonce
"Lady Marmalade" – Christina Aguilera, et al
"When I Grow Up" – Pussycat Dolls
"King of Anything" – Sara Bareilles
"Perfect Day" – Hoku

What tunes did I miss? Let me know what songs you'd add to this playlist in the comments!

Make a Spread of Your Favorite Foods

When some people picture being single on Valentine's Day, they might think of eating a sad frozen dinner. That doesn't have to be your fate! While getting your favorite takeout (or an overpriced heart-shaped pizza) is an awesome option, I also like going the charcuterie-board-and-lots-of-desserts route. That's what I did last year and it felt super festive! I definitely went a bit overboard and got way more food than one person could possibly eat... but then I had leftovers for the rest of the week! Indulging in a favorite food – especially if it's not something you have all the time – can be a great way to celebrate being single on Valentine's Day. Think of it this way: you don't have to compromise on a restaurant or cook a big meal (unless you want to!). You'll get exactly what you want without having to consider anyone else.

Watch an Uplifting (or Distracting) Movie

Watching a movie is one of my favorite ways to relax. But when you're a single woman on Valentine's Day, you might feel like avoiding conventional rom-coms and films that end in happily ever after. I'm at a point where I can enjoy watching a good love story at any time, but I wanted to share a bunch of movies to watch on Valentine's Day when you're single to distract you from reality (or give you hope for the future).

  • The First Wive's Club
  • Music & Lyrics
  • Austenland
  • Mrs. Henderson Presents
  • Amelie
  • The Break-Up
  • The Parent Trap
  • Never Been Kissed
  • Mean Girls
  • Charlie's Angels
  • Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris
  • Ocean's 11
  • Legally Blonde
  • Miss Congeniality
  • 9 to 5
  • The Italian Job
  • Practical Magic
  • Ever After
  • Romy & Michele's High School Reunion
  • Knives Out
  • Julie & Julia
  • The Birdcage
  • Miss Pettigrew Lives For a Day
  • Spice World
  • My Big Fat Greek Wedding
  • Clueless
  • That Thing You Do!
  • Drop Dead Gorgeous
  • See How They Run

Set Aside Time For Yourself

Since Valentine's Day is on a Tuesday this year, you might have to work for most of the day. I have more flexibility with my schedule, so I like to end my workday a little early and schedule some activities to avoid doom-scrolling or being too tired after 8 hours in front of the computer. This year, I might give myself enough time to take a hot shower, do a bit of pampering, assemble my snacky spread, and select my entertainment for the night.

Even if you can't duck out early, don't treat the plans you made with yourself as an afterthought! When you're a single woman on Valentine's Day, you should prioritize what makes you feel your best. If you're planning to celebrate the weekend before, mindfully carve out some quality alone time. Surrounding yourself with friends or family can be helpful, but I eventually realized I was doing that out of fear. Once I actually took away the distractions, I was able to enjoy myself a lot more. It can feel scary at first (especially if you're not accustomed to being alone), but now I prefer it.

Wear the Comfiest Clothes

I love dressing up more than just about anyone. But if I'm planning to stay home by yourself on Valentine's Day, I'm all about being comfortable. I'm talking fleecy pajama pants, an oversized tee, a soft robe, and slippers. For something like this, a hoodie + leggings > a new dress. Of course, I still like to stay on-theme when I'm in lounging attire... but you don't have to follow suit. :) I think I'll be wearing these Old Navy heart pajamas this year!

Don't Make it Mean Everything

Truly celebrating Valentine's Day when you're single can feel impossible at first. But really, it's just another day. It's not a reflection on your worth or on how desirable and lovable you are. I promise. Don't fall into that trap.

Being a single woman on Valentine's Day doesn't mean you've failed or that you should be ashamed of where you are in life. I've struggled with feeling this way a lot in the past. But remember: you never know what's going on behind closed doors. That "perfect" relationship you're envying might not be so idyllic. And getting the chance to connect with yourself and prioritize your wants and needs is priceless.

If nothing else, you will survive being single on Valentine's Day. Even if it sucks, at least you'll have some chocolate and be wearing sweatpants. But it doesn't have to suck quite so much if you have this single girl's survival guide on-hand. And when you don't feel much like showing yourself some love, just know that I'm sending lots of it your way.

Galentine's Day Brunch 2022: How to Throw a Party Your Gal Pals Will Love

galentine's day brunch

Let's go, girls.

If that line doesn't make you want to strut, I'm not sure what will.

valentine's favors candy

It's nearly time for Galentine's Day 2022! It surprised me to recently learn that a lot of people aren't actually familiar with the phenomenon of Galentine's Day. Maybe it's a generational thing. But this one's for the ladies – so it's a holiday that deserves more attention.

Ever since I first watched Parks and Recreation, I've been a fan of Galentine's Day. (Check out my previous Galentine's Day post!) How could you resist Leslie Knope's commitment to celebrating female friendships? I'm lucky enough to have a bunch of lovely ladies in my life and I was thrilled to have the chance to bring some of my Galentine's Day party ideas to life with a few of them!

galentines day

Those who still follow my blog are getting this content a little bit early than everyone else will on Instagram, since Galentine's Day is officially on Sunday (yes, the same day as the Super Bowl... which seems... a bit unfair). So if you want to know how to host a Galentine's Day Party in advance, feel free to draw inspiration from these photos and my tips below.

Galentine's Day Decorations

I believe that when you're learning how to host a Galentine's Day party, you have to go all out. I picked up decor from Target, Amazon, Marshall's, Michael's, and my mom's house. I even ordered a bunch of balloons (and had them delivered!). My vision was inspired by Carrie and Miranda's ill-fated Valentine's Day dinner in the Sex and the City movie mixed with a child's birthday party.

galentines decor

Some of my decorations are no longer available, but I'll include some links below to what I used (or very similar items).

Since I love pink, I already had a lot to pull from. I'm a bit of a traditionalist, but feel free to come up with your own theme! You could do all red, red and white, all black, or bright and bold colors! There are no Galentine's Day decor rules, in my opinion.

Galentine's Day Menu

I've seen a number of posts on TikTok showing some Galentine's Day party ideas and Galentine's Day menus, but I planned my celebration early this year.

I knew from the beginning that I wanted to host a brunch. Not only do I love breakfast food, but it's a meal that I can handle making! It's also easy to supplement ready-made items (or ones you can heat in the oven). In comparison to a fancy dinner party, it's relatively low stress while still feeling festive.

galentines day party

Of course, a Galentine's Day brunch is a natural choice for February 13th (thanks to Leslie Knope's love of waffles). There are a ton of possibilities for Galentine's Day brunch foods, which made it difficult for me to narrow it down. But when I finalized my Galentine's Day menu, I was pretty pleased with my selections.

For Galentine's Day 2022, I served:

  • Quiche Lorraine
  • Apple maple chicken sausages
  • Spring mix salad with lemon dressing
  • Heart-shaped waffles and fresh strawberries
  • Real maple syrup
  • Breakfast potatoes
  • Fresh fruit
  • Chocolate and almond croissants
  • Strawberry mousse cakes
  • Heart-shaped macarons
  • Chocolate covered strawberries
  • Assorted juice, sparkling cider, and coffee

Surprising no one, I made way too much food for the number of guests in attendance. But that meant I got to send everyone home with Galentine's Day brunch leftovers (and I was able to enjoy some myself for the rest of the week)!

Don't forget to grab yourself this adorable Dash mini waffle maker to satisfy your heart-shaped waffle cravings! It's so easy to use and comes in a bunch of different styles.

How to Plan a Galentine's Day Party: Quick Tips

I'm definitely not an expert and I'm not really someone who loves hosting parties. But I care about my friends, I love food, and I get a lot of joy out of creating beautiful spaces. With that said, here are a few quick tips to keep in mind if you're wondering how to plan a Galentine's Day celebration.

Use what you already have. I save decorations from year to year and ended up borrowing a bunch of stuff that could work with a pink-and-red theme. (Thanks, Mom!) I love that I had access to lots of heart-shaped bowls and plates, but you don't necessarily have to go out and buy a lot to make your tablescape look valentine-y. I raided my own china cabinet for some floral antiques to use, a red or pink tablecloth on  a card table with plain white dishes will look just as elegant!

Keep your guest list small. I suggest this all the time as an introvert, but having only a handful of guests will make things much more manageable. You won't have to buy as much Galentine's brunch food (in theory, anyway!) and you won't feel overwhelmed trying to balance social obligations while you cook. And if you have limited seating like I do, it won't be a problem to fit everyone around the table! That way, no one feels left out of the conversation.

Remember dietary restrictions. I admittedly could have done better on this one! I'm a cheese lover, so I had a number of items on my Galentine's Day menu that contained dairy. Not every person with lactose intolerance will be able to take medication, so remind yourself to check in with your guests about dietary restrictions. If you have vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free guests, make sure they can enjoy a complete meal (even if they aren't able to sample every dish). If your guest list is a bit larger, you may want to use place cards to label dishes as being vegan-friendly, gluten-free, or non-dairy to cut down on confusion.

Dress up (if your friends are game). It's no surprise that I love any excuse to dress up. While most of my friends keep things a bit more casual than I do, something I adore about them is that they appreciate my enthusiasm for a good theme. My friends dressed up in a way that felt right for their personal style, which made things even more fun (and they were still comfortable!). For reference, the dress I wore is from Unique Vintage!

Don't bite off more than you can chew. Except when it comes to waffles. :) Learning how to host a Galentine's Day party (or any kind of event, for that matter) can be stressful. Plans can go awry and if you're too focused on perfecting every detail, you might become overwhelmed. During the planning stage, check in with yourself to ensure you're not taking on too much. Give yourself plenty of time to prepare and keep your expectations in check. In the end, it's not about pulling off a party without a hitch; it's about celebrating the most important ladies in your life!

galentines day 2022

Are you planning anything special for Galentine's Day 2022? With only a few days left until the 13th, there's still time to schedule something with your best gal pals! Even if it's just a virtual hang or a quick cup of coffee, Galentine's Day gives us a great excuse to show our most favorite women how much they mean to us. But really, we should try to do that every day.

Friday Favorites #165: Be Mine, Valentine

It's been quite a while since I had the time to put together a Friday Favorites post! But with Valentine's Day right around the corner, I wanted to share a few things that I've fallen for.

I always love shopping for Valentine's Day gifts for myself, as well as finding Valentine's gifts for best friends. I may be single right now, but that doesn't mean I shouldn't show myself and my gal pals some love! Whether you're looking for something cozy to practice some self-care on February 14th or you're looking for that viral Betsey Johnson heart dress from TikTok, I bet you'll swoon over something I've included below!

I don't really have any plans for Valentine's Day this year – and I'm actually okay with that! I might pick up a few things to pamper myself, but I think I'll be keeping things low-key this year.

If you're looking for some more ways to treat yourself this February, be sure to check back here on Tuesday the 1st! I promise I'll have something special waiting for you. :) What do you think it could be?

Virtual Valentine's Day Ideas For 2021

virtual valentine's day ideas

We all know that holidays look a lot different during the pandemic. And pretty soon, we'll be hitting that one-year mark...which is bananas to think about. Valentine's Day 2020 was actually the last major holiday most of us experienced B.C. (before COVID-19), which means you might be a little bummed about your limited options for Valentine's Day 2021.

But that doesn't mean your V-Day has to be boring. I'm a total introvert and homebody, so I may be biased, but I really enjoy coming up with creative ways to celebrate without ever leaving the house! Whether you're wondering how singles celebrate Valentine's Day during the pandemic or you're separated from your sweetie this February 14, I'm sharing some virtual Valentine's Day ideas that you're sure to love.

valentine's day pandemic

Host a Galentine's Zoom Brunch
A Galentine's brunch invite is always exciting to receive. But while many eateries are open in some capacity, you may not feel comfortable gathering with your girls without masks and in close quarters. Fortunately, you can still enjoy some bottomless mimosas and waffles from afar. Set up a Zoom call for mid-morning on the 13th (a Saturday this year!) and make your favorite brunch food – or order from your favorite breakfast spot! – to savor with your besties. Plus, you can wear cute pajamas if you want.

Organize a Hulu Rom-Com Watch Party
Grab some popcorn, open your laptop, and revisit some of your favorite flicks with your BFFs. Hulu's Watch Party feature has thousands of TV shows and movies to watch with a group of up to eight people in sync. While it might not be a substitute for watching in the theatre, you can chat as much as you want without disturbing anyone. Some of the best movies for Galentine's Day are available to select. Just test it out beforehand to account for any technical issues – and have some chocolate (or some tissues) on-hand for emergencies.

virtual valentine's day celebrations

Have BFF FaceTime Date
As simple as it may sound, it's easy to forget how effective FaceTime calls are at lifting one's mood. Schedule an hour-long FaceTime date with your best friend, partner, or family member while you perform a fun activity – like an at-home spa treatment, baking session, or Valentine outfit fashion show. You can even play a "how well do you know me?" game if you each get a set!

Sign Up For a Virtual Reading
Want to know what your future holds? Consider signing up for a virtual tarot, palm, or astrological chart reading! This can be a great way to support independent readers and astrologers during a time when in-person readings are difficult to manage. And of course, it can be exciting to see what the stars or the cards have in store. See about signing up with a friend or partner and treat yourselves to a session! Make sure you know your exact birth time if you're having your astrological chart done.

Take an Online Class
If you're stumped on virtual Valentine's Day 2021 ideas, you could always learn something new! There are plenty of online courses with valentine themes being offered this year, from cooking to crafts. The Rochester Brainery even has an entire section of virtual classes for Valentine's Day, like soap-making, quilting, embroidery, cookie decorating, and chocolate-tasting. Most classes are quite affordable and can allow you to connect with others in an unexpected way.

sending out valentine cards

Partake in a Virtual Shopping Event
A shopping spree can be the perfect cure for the Valentine's Day blues, but you might prefer to avoid the mall and crowded retail centers right now. Of course, online shopping is always there when you need it. But I recently saw on Instagram that a bunch of local vendors are teaming up to host a Virtual Valentine's Bazaar this Saturday (January 30). They'll be offering exclusive sales, which means you can save and snag some awesome products from independent artists. Even if you're not local, check out all of the details in this post or follow the #VirtualValentinesBazaar hashtag on Instagram to get in on the action!

Send Out Gifts or Old-School Valentines
Sometimes, going back to basics is best. But if you aren't exchanging gifts with a partner, you can show how much you care for your loved ones by sending them something special. I love the idea of ordering a custom bouquet or even a flower CSA from a local florist. If you're in Rochester, I highly recommend Sungrove Blossoms, Trademarks Flower Farm, and Flowerwell (or if you're in the Los Angeles area, check out Starving Artist Arrangements!). You could also bake some homemade cookies and deliver them to your local friends on Valentine's Day – or, my personal favorite, send out some old-school valentine cards! I adore these vintage-inspired card set from Harveys, but here are some other retro valentine cards that should arrive in time for you to send out. Alternatively, you could send paperless valentines straight to your recipient's email!

Try Your Hand at Online Trivia
Those who miss trivia nights at their favorite bar might want to consider virtual trivia as a viable alternative! You might have some local organizations who are putting on online trivia events, but you can also browse available options on Eventbrite. Some are free, while others require a registration fee. I can't personally vouch for any of these events, there are all kinds of themes – like The Office, Parks and Recreation, '90s trivia, and love – to choose from. You could even put together and host your own if you want to raise money for a worthy cause! Be sure to order yourself some takeout, grab your favorite beverage, and get ready to rack your brain.

Galentine's Day

galentine's day

Friends, waffles, work. Only the first two are really important on Galentine's Day, when we celebrate our relationships with other women (and our relationship with delicious breakfast food). I've wanted to throw a Galentine's get-together for a few years now, but the scheduling has never really worked out. But I was determined to have a little celebration with my mom – who is both my best gal pal and the one who helped bring my vision to life! – and enjoy some homemade waffles together.

Friday Favorites #162: Valentine Wish List

Today's the last day of January (finally!!!), which means that Valentine's Day is just two weeks away. I may not have a sweetheart this year, but I'm taking that as an excuse to treat myself instead. I thought it was high time I put together a new Friday Favorites post – and this one is Valentine-themed! See what I'm swooning over below.

Saint Valentine

All images by Emma Rizzo Photo
Valentine's Day is here... and to be honest, I don't feel quite as downtrodden as I thought I would. Maybe it's because I'm realizing that love can take many different forms – and doesn't necessarily stop or disappear just because situations change. Maybe it's because I'm lucky enough to be spending time with a lot of people I love during the next few days. Or maybe it's because I got a lot of my crying out of the way last week. I've been saying that I'm my own valentine this year, but I also think that this year is about healing my heart. So I'm trying to focus on that instead of romanticizing what I no longer have.

Also, I might be feeling better than expected because my mom and I are having breakfast for dinner tonight and I'm just plain excited for pancakes... Who's to say, really?

I knew I wanted to feature a lot of pink and a lot of flowers in this post, so I arranged a bouquet (into a heart – totally by accident!!) and ventured out into the snowy tundra with Emma. These photos turned out dreamier than I could have hoped. If you're thinking about buying a dress from the Gal Meets Glam collection, I'd highly recommend it. I can't say enough good things about the quality! The February collection will be out on the 20th and I can't wait to see some of the resort wear (even though I won't be able to wear it for a few months).

I'm not sure whether we'll be dressed to the nines tonight or whether we'll be in pajamas, but I'm glad I have something to look forward to. And I'll be spending the weekend with some of my favorite ladies (because Galentine's Day should last longer, right?). So for now, things are looking up.

Sending you lots of love today, valentines.

PS: the winner of my giveaway has been chosen! Congratulations to Athena and thanks to everyone who entered. There will be more giveaways on the horizon, I promise.
